Liberty

Okay, so this is going to be a bit of a different post. :)

The Challenger school sends home a monthly newsletter with the kids for the parents. In March's newsletter, on the front page, there was an article titled "A Lesson in Liberty--Self-Reliance and Productivity"

It starts out with a small story:

"....Tommy rakes leaves for a neighbor all day. His younger brother rakes with him for an hour, but then plays with the neighbor's dog for the rest of the day. The neighbor pays Tommy ten dollars and the little brother one dollar.

When Tommy gets home, his mom says, "Tommy, you have to share the money equally with your brother. He's little and couldn't work as hard. He'll feel bad if you don't share with him." In this fictional scenario, the students considered the values of justice, self-reliance, and productivity. If such incidents become routine, what happens to Tommy's motivation to continue working when his hard-earned money is given to his brother who does not work? And what happens to Little Brother when he learns that he doesn't need to work---he can just rely on Tommy for his money?

Forcing Tommy to give the money to his little brother ignores his right to property--to keep what he has earned. When we take earnings from people, we constrict the right to their property.

It may seem that his little brother gets the best deal. But in actuality, if the leaf-raking day is repeated, he will not develop his self-worth and the deep joy of being self-reliant.

There is then an excerpt from Dr. Adrian Rogers' Ten Secrets for a Successful Family

"You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the industrious out of it. You don't multiply wealth by dividing it. Government cannot give anything to anybody that it doesn't first take from somebody else.

"Whenever somebody receives something without working for it, somebody else has to work for it without receiving. The worst thing that can happen to a nation is for half of the people to get the idea they don't have to work because somebody else will work for them, and the other half to get the idea that it does no good to work because they don't get to enjoy the fruit of their labor."

So, any of you who know me well, know that I am quiet in my political ideas. I have a husband who is very strong-opinioned on many political topics....or should I say all political topics....so he kind of speaks for the both of us. :) Although, lately....well, since our new president has been in office, I have been very scared for what is to come of our great country. When I read this article, I got cold chills. It couldn't have been put simpler. If only the majority of people could see what his agenda really was/is, before he got elected into office.....
